AI Visibility Metrics: Measure What the Evidence Supports
Separate AI mentions, citations, accuracy, and visitor outcomes. Build reporting with explicit denominators, documented samples, and actionable findings.

A useful dashboard lets you inspect the evidence behind the chart. Keep mentions, citations, accuracy, and visitor activity in distinct layers before combining them into a story.
01 / AI Visibility Analytics
Begin with the question a stakeholder needs answered. A product-accuracy review, a topic-gap analysis, and a traffic investigation need different measures. Choose a small set of metrics that can support the intended decision instead of filling a dashboard with numbers because they are available.
Keep the source of each measure visible. A provider report, a controlled prompt sample, and a website analytics report describe different contexts. Similar labels do not make the numbers interchangeable.

In an illustrative sample, eighteen of sixty valid answers contain a qualifying domain citation. The observed citation rate is thirty percent for that sample. It does not describe all users or all questions. Invalid requests are recorded separately rather than silently counted as absence.
Show topic groups, branded status, and observation conditions. Annotate changes in the question set or collection method. Preserve the saved answers so a reviewer can move from a surprising total to the examples that produced it.
03 / AI Visibility Analytics
A citation is not a click, a click is not a qualified inquiry, and a change following an edit does not by itself establish causation. Review the underlying responses and the project change log before explaining a trend.
A useful review ends with a few specific actions: correct a claim, investigate a missing source, revise a confusing explanation, or gather more evidence. A decision not to act can be just as valuable when the observations do not justify a change.
Illustrative reporting example
Sample data only. Each row represents 60 hypothetical valid observations in one defined prompt setโnot live platform activity.
| Experience | Cited answers | Valid observations | Sample citation rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 18 | 60 | 30% |
| Gemini | 15 | 60 | 25% |
| Claude | 12 | 60 | 20% |
| Perplexity | 21 | 60 | 35% |
| Microsoft Copilot | 9 | 60 | 15% |
18 cited answers รท 60 valid observations ร 100 = 30%. Accuracy, visits, and business outcomes require separate evidence. The examples do not compare the quality or market share of the listed products.
